A RARE ENGLISH MAP OF SOUTH EAST ASIA, 1748

$480 SGD (inclusive of GST)

Published by Edward Cave , London in Gentleman's Magazine A Map by T.Jefferys dedicated to the Prince of Wales, future George IV . This uncommon map appeared within a periodical of the day celebrating Admiral George Anson's success with HMS Centurion in ambushing close to Manila the Spanish Galleon " Nostra Senora de Covadonga" on a yearly journey from Acapulco with a full treasure of gold and silver in June 1743. The Spanish routes are sown on this map as well as Anson's ones. The famous exploit came 18 months after Anson's capture of a Spanish Galleon off the Coast of Peru' which had nautical maps showing all the routes of the Spanish Fleet in the Pacific. Indeed included there were maps of routes from Mexico to supply the Philippines colony with gold and silver used to finance it and facilitate trading with Chinese merchants. It is safe to say that for over 200 years before then the British Fleet had been keen in disrupting this supply. Admiral Anson returned to London in June 1744 a very rich man ( the Spanish Galleon had over 1.3 million silver dollars on board) and achieved considerable influence. He will be named the Father of the British Navy. Presented in a gold colour wooden frame

Map: 23 x 26.5 cm, Frame: 38 x 48 cm
